The Unique Jesus -- Matt. 8:23-27
Intro: People were amazed @ Jesus.
A. The way nature obeyed His voice.
B. The way He could heal
1. Sometimes laying His hands on someone
2. Sometimes just by saying "You're healed"
3. He even made clay with His spit & rubbed it on a man
4. Point is, He did things differently, like no one else.
C. Jesus was unique
1. John 3:16
a. "only begotten" means unique, one of a kind.
b. There are many, many ways in which He was
unique, we will take a look @ just a few.
I. Jesus is unique in His Person, Who He is.
A. He had a "theanthropic" nature
1) Not half-God, half-man! He was fully God & fully man.
2) As God, he enjoyed all the privileges of deity
a. John 1:1-4
b. More than just present at creation, He created!
3) As God, He knows what's in the hearts of men
a. John 2:24-25
C. As man, he could relate to us on our own level. (Jn 1:14)
1) He suffered like a man, thirsted, hungered, got tired,
felt pain, love & compassion.
2) He was even tempted!
a."For we do not have a high priest who cannot
sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who
has been tempted in all things as we are,
yet without sin." Heb 4:15
b. He showed us by example that sin can be overcome.
D. Jesus is God's ultimate conversation with man.
1) Heb.1:1-2
a. God used various messengers to talk to His
people using signs, revelations, dreams, etc
2) Finally became man Himself just to make it easier
for us to relate to Him, just to get our attention!
II. Jesus is unique in His purpose.
A. His sole purpose in being born as man was to die.
1) " Now my soul has become troubled; and what
shall I say, 'Father save Me from this hour'?
But for this purpose I came to this hour."
John 12:27
B. Even one of His birthday presents were a grim prophecy
of His death.
a. Gold - common gift for kings
Frankincense - used by priests in temple worship
Myrrh - Spice used for embalming bodies for burial.
Used by Nicodemas to prepare Jesus' body
(John 19:39)
C. Knowing this to be God' will, He would not be deterred
1) Matt.16:21-23
2) Living under the shadow of cross every day,
He walked purposefully toward it
a. John 4:34 "My food is to do the will of Him who
sent Me."
3) God's will was to offer up His own Son to be a sacrifice
to atone for our sins
a. Even His name 'Yeshua' gives a hint of what He
would do (God will save us)
D. God let it be known thruout the history of the world that
He would send a suffering servant to die
1) Isa.53 describes the "lamb being led to the slaughter"
2) Psa.22 vividly depicts a death eerily like crucifixion
many years before it was practiced.
E. All the while, Jesus went thru with it because He loves us.
1) Heb 12:2
III. Jesus is unique in His presentation.
A. In what He said
1) Luke 4:14-21, John 8:31-40, 54-59
a. No one ever made claims like this!
2) Apparently His message made an impact
3) God Himself wanted Jesus to be listened to
a. Luke 9:28-35 The transfiguration
b. Vs. 35 "...listen to Him!"
B. Unique also in how He said it.
1)During Sermon on the mount (Matt 5-7) Jesus talks
about many things
a. Beatitudes, personal relationships, prayer, etc
2) But He spoke unlike the other religious leaders
a. Matt.7:28-29
b. He spoke with authority because He not only
knew Scripture, He fulfilled it!
c. Everyone's heard about the irate preacher asking
the little kid to wake up a sleeping church-goer.
Kid answers, "You put him to sleep, YOU wake
him up!" Jesus never put anybody to sleep;
when He spoke, people listened!
3) He had plenty to say to the religious elite
a. Always had them on edge, constantly
challenged.
(Matt 23 - Woe Pharisees & scribes, hypocrites!)
b. Once temple guards sent to seize Him returned
empty handed. Said one "Never did a man
speak the way this man speaks." John 7:46
3) He often alienated the religious leadership
a. No doubt could have had more followers if he
had conformed to their error, but He would have
none of it.
C. Also unique in what He did to get His message out
1) He didn't go to upper class society, He went to
bottom.
a. Associated with dregs of society:
tax collectors, sinners, even prostitutes
b. "It is not those who are well who need a
physician, but those who are sick.
I have not come to call the righteous,
but sinners to repentance." Luke 5:31-32
2) He didn't preach a soft message
a. He made it clear that discipleship has a cost
b. Luke 9:57-62
c. His conditions were never without promises
IV. Jesus is unique in His promises.
A. It's the content of His promises that make them
so unique
1) He promises rest
a. Matt.11:28
2) He promises access to God Himself
a. "I am the way...." John 14:6
3) He promises something better when this life is over.
a. John 14:1-3
4) The list can go on & on
B. Someone said there are over 30,000 promises in Bible
Many from lips of Jesus Himself.
1) They are all to be had in Jesus.
a. "For as many as may be the promises of
God, in Him they are yes..."2Cor.1:20
Conc. The key phrase is "in Him"
A. Are you in Him?
1. Remember "I am the way, the truth and the light. No one comes
to the Father but through Me."
2. Noone offers what unique Jesus does! -- Eph 1:7
