Some facts about churches of Christ
[Garreth L. Clair – January 2007]
Those of us that make up the church of Christ here at 4840 Cemetery Road in
Hilliard, Ohio encourage you to come and visit us during our regular
assemblies. There is always an open door to you. Whatever we can do to assist you to a
better knowledge of the Lord's Church will be a joy for us to provide. Some
facts about the church are:
1. The churches of Christ [cf. Romans 16:16] had their
origin approximately 33 AD in the city of Jerusalem in what is now the nation of
Israel in the Holy Land.
2. The originator of the churches of Christ is Jesus Christ,
see, Matthew 16:13-18,
13 Now when Jesus came into the parts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked
his disciples, saying, Who do men say that the Son of man is?
14 And they said, Some (say) John the Baptist; some, Elijah; and
others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.
15 He saith unto them, But who say ye that I am?
16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of
the living God.
17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon
Bar-Jonah: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father who is
in heaven.
18 And I also say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I
will build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

3. The first congregation of the churches of Christ began
meeting in Jerusalem about 33 AD, please read the 2nd chapter of the book of
Acts, notice especially verses 27-47.
4. Churches of Christ do not have a creed, the only rule of
faith and practice we recognize is the Written Word of God (i.e., the Bible).
5. Churches of Christ have no earthly headquarters, the
headquarters of the churches of Christ is where the Lord Jesus Christ resides, see
Colossians 1:13-18,
13 who delivered us out of the power of darkness, and translated us
into the kingdom of the Son of his love;
14 in whom we have our redemption, the forgiveness of our sins:
15 who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all
creation;
16 for in him were all things created, in the heavens and upon the
earth, things visible and things invisible, whether thrones or dominions or
principalities or powers; all things have been created through him, and unto him;
17 and he is before all things, and in him all things consist.
18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the
beginning, the
19 firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have
the
preeminence. ASV
6. The churches of Christ meet for communion and to lay by in store
upon the first day of each week, note the following Biblical references, Acts
20:7,
7 And upon the first day of the week, when we were gathered together
to break bread, Paul discoursed with them, intending to depart on the morrow;
and prolonged his speech until midnight. ASV
1 Corinthians 16:1-2,
1 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I gave order to
the churches of Galatia, so also do ye.
2 Upon the first day of the week let each one of you lay
by him in store,
as he may prosper, that no collections be made when I come. ASV
NOTE:
Churches of Christ also pray, sing, and teach/preach whenever they come
