My suggestion if there is any question is to buy a B.J. Worth's - Tax
Guide for Religious Workers there it is explained. It is a mistake
for the local church to give the preacher working with them a 1099
misc. B.J. will explain all of that in her book.
I know of a preparer who was charged a fine for each preacher tax
return he did using a 1099 misc. You are correct to give a 1099 misc
to a fellow who holds a meeting for you.
I know that B.J. talks about the designations of Parsonage and
Professional expense and how it has to be done to be accepted. I
remember one congregation I worked with where they gave me a 1099
misc. IRS disallowed my Parsonage and Professional expenses for the
year stating that by giving me a 1099 misc the church basically threw
out the agreement. I have been getting a W-2 ever since even if I
have to fill out the W-2 myself.
