QUESTIONS & ANSWERES
By Garreth L. Clair
QUESTION 19 and 20:
19. Brother Clair how do you explain the answer to the lawyer who asked the
question of Jesus in Matthew 22:35-39?
“And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, trying him: 36 Teacher,
which is the great commandment in the law? 37 And he said unto him, Thou shall
love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all
thy mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second like (unto
it) is this, Thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself.” ASV
20. Please comment so I can understand Matt. 22:35-39? Thanks
ANSWER:
As we read and study the Written Word of God [i.e. the Bible] we
find the statement uttered by Jesus in Matthew 22:37-39, “37 And he said unto
him, Thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy
soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a
second like (unto it) is this; Thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself.” ASV
CONSIDER THIS:
As we consider these three verses in Matthew 22 our understanding tells us
that one must love God with their whole heart and that one must love their
neighbor as much as they love themselves. If therefore we profess to love God
audibly but silently without utterance love not our neighbor we have partially
accepted the commandment and partially denied the instruction. Whenever one makes
a choice that alters the results of any command they become guilty of
disobeying the whole – cf. James 2:8-10, “8 Howbeit if ye fulfill the royal law,
according to the scripture, Thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well: 9
but if ye have respect of persons, ye commit sin, being convicted by the law
as transgressors. 10 for whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble
in one (point); he is become guilty of all.” ASV
